What To Serve With Chicken Pot Pie

When the weather gets cooler, classic comfort foods start sounding really good, and chicken pot pie is high on my comfort foods list, especially for chilly fall and winter evenings.

With a buttery, flaky crust covering chicken, gravy, and veggies, it can almost pass for a complete meal in itself. But no matter how good an entree is, I want something to complement the flavors and wake up my taste buds.

Best Side Dishes To Serve With Chicken Pot Pie

In my opinion, light, sweet, and fresh sides are best to offset the savory richness of chicken pot pie. After perusing my recipe books, I came up with five delicious chicken pot pie sides.

So if you’re trying to decide what goes with chicken pot pie, read on. Whether you’re planning this meal for yourself or a crowd, you’ll want to serve something to counterbalance the rich, hearty flavors. This classic comfort food needs a side dish.

1. Cran-Orange Almond Salad

Salad is an obvious choice, but rather than a simple green salad with that old standby, ranch dressing, how about something a little more impressive?

My all-time favorite green salad, Cran-Orange Almond Salad , also happens to be a great choice to serve with chicken pot pie because citrus is a main ingredient. Citrus flavors are an ideal counterpoint for savory, hearty foods. I also enjoy the lovely, bright colors of this salad: green, dark red, and orange.

I usually make this salad without the dried cranberries because I prefer the simple sweetness of the oranges. You might be just the opposite and think the cranberries add just the right touch.

It’s your choice; it’s a great salad either way. If you’re not a huge fan of dried cranberries like me, you could include them on the side as an add-on option.

In my opinion, you’ll want to be sure to include jicama. The jicama elevates the salad and gives it a great crunch.

I often make this salad to potluck dinners (it always gets compliments), and I’ve found it’s best to combine the ingredients just before serving, so the lettuce doesn’t wilt.

2. Easy Fruit Salad

Fruit salad is another option for a sweet side dish. There are so many great fruit salads that it’s hard to choose just one. Ambrosia is always good, and fruit with jello is a family-friendly option that everyone will like.

However, for fall and winter, I enjoy a fruit salad that includes apples. It’s a little more work to cut them up, but it is so worth it for their mild flavor and crunch.

This salad recipe also includes bananas, which provide a mellow sweetness to balance out any tartness. Try this the next time you serve chicken pot pie to a crowd.

You can easily make this fruit salad ahead of time and leave it in the refrigerator until ready to serve. In fact, this fruit salad is even better when the flavors have time to marry. One or two hours in the fridge will do wonders.

3. Green Beans With Almonds

Chicken pot pie already has vegetables in it, of course, but they’re smothered in gravy, so a light vegetable side dish works well. The lemon juice in Green Beans With Almonds adds a touch of citrus to brighten the flavors. This just happens to be my favorite way to serve green beans.

It’s best to prepare this dish just before serving, but an alternative is to cook the beans and toast the almonds ahead of time. You can warm the beans up in the microwave and then add the toppings.

If you love asparagus, you can substitute asparagus for the green beans. Instead of boiling, roast the asparagus in a 400-degree oven for 8 minutes.

It’s somewhat counterintuitive, but I’ve found that asparagus with thick stalks has a better flavor and texture than the young, thinner stalks. Just be sure to trim off the woody ends before you roast.

4. Corn With Roasted Garlic Aioli

If your chicken pot pie has green beans in it, you might want to choose a different side dish.

Corn on the cob is best when slathered in butter, but this aioli sauce with lemon juice and lime zest makes it a better pairing with chicken pot pie. And the smoked paprika and mustard gives it a little kick.

Try this corn recipe , and you may not want to serve corn on the cob any other way. For best results, make the aioli at least 30 minutes ahead of time.

5. Cornbread

According to my grandfather, a meal isn’t complete unless it includes bread of some sort. I like to serve cornbread with chicken pot pie because of its sweetness. But you’ll want the right recipe.

Have you ever had cornbread that was a little too dry and flat? I’ve been the person who served cornbread like that, unfortunately.

Since then, I’ve found this cornbread recipe that always seems to come out great.
